Sometimes I wonder who our government really works for, the people or big business.
More precisely, Big Oil.
The U. S. Government sets gas pumps to 60 degrees F. That means gas is being
dispensed as if it is always 60 degrees outside. Since gas contracts in cooler
temperatures, this standard may work in Iceland, but here in the Tropic of Hades,
it is grossly unfair. In places, like Texas, the temperature is alot higher in those
underground gas tanks. Especially in the late afternoon, we are often in the mid to
high 90′s, even hotter. There are 12 states (Texas included), which has average fuel
temperatures of more than 10 degrees ABOVE government standards. So that gas is in an
expanded state, which means a cost difference of up to 2 percent or 3 cents or better
on every gallon. In other words, you are not receiving what you are paying for.
Consumer advocates wants U. S. Fuel retailers to install nozzles that counterbalance
temperature changes. Which you would think the government would have mandated a
looooooong time ago. But officials say, (here we go again!), this would push gas
prices even higher. Of course, -figures-, a fish can fart in the ocean and gas
prices go up!
Even if the new nozzles were in place, the price of gas is still highway robbery!
So, the bottom line, fuel up in the morning if at all possible. But if your overnight
temperatures do not go below 60, you are still getting screwed at the pump.
